Reclaiming The Pagan Cultural Narrative
The main thrust of my argument is that, as Christian Nationalism and it’s call for authoritarianism rise in the United States, the Pagan community will come under increasing attack and condemnation rooted in a lack of understanding about who and what we are. This lack of understanding is a result of us ceding the cultural narrative of what it means to be pagan, what we actually believe, and how our beliefs manifest in our community to capitalist media and assimilationist politics as a result of our inherently insular communities. To combat this we must each become more engaged and public in our communities by putting our faith into action.
Call To Action: Tending To The Dead
I want to start this by saying I am in no way the first person to discuss the otherworldly impacts of things like war, the pandemic, or climate change when it comes to the dead. If anything, I’m just adding to a list of voices that are calling for the same thing - the need to tend to our dead. The beginning of Spring (in the northern hemisphere) might seem like a weird time to draw attention to death and the dead, after all this is the time of rebirth and new beginnings and life coming back into the world, but strangely I think that is exactly why it’s important to remember our dead right now.
Guest Post: Cultivating Hope - Lessons From Our Fungal Elders
I am excited to share another guest post from my dear friend and go-to resource for bioregional witchcraft, Doozy. For context, this guest post was written on the day the verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse case was announced.
Queer Ancestor Spotlight: William Stringfellow and Anthony Towne
William Stringfellow and Anthony Towne were charged by the U.S. government in December 1970 for harboring a fugitive - a Jesuit priest named Daniel Berrigan. Father Berrigan was part of a group known as the ‘Catonsville Nine’ who had been charged with destroying federal property for burning hundreds of draft cards during a protest against the Vietnam War. After evading federal authorities for months he was eventually found at Stringfellow and Towne’s home on Block Island, Rhode Island.
Guest Post: Hail Columbia! A Ritual To Call Upon America’s Overlooked Goddess
The government is filled with corrupt officials who have actively betrayed their oaths of office in pursuit of power, bringing active harm to my communities and many others. Suffice to say, my magical political activism needed to up it’s game, and I was trying to determine who to call in for aid. Calling upon the Founding Fathers is just a little too patriarchal for my taste. Calling upon the Spirit of America kept summoning images of the Old West, which was not what I was going for. Maybe Lady Liberty? That was closer, but it felt like something was missing. Then the name Columbia came up. You know of Columbia, right? The Goddess of America? Or, more accurately, the Forgotten Goddess of America. Lady Liberty, who is more familiar to most of us these days, is Her daughter.
